A DOCTOR REMINDS THE DAME ABOUT THE BAD OLD DAYS

MISS FRUITWOOD
IN HER WAR OFFICE DAYS

Dear Dame
Your mention of the Holiday Inn Hotel application to build a casino reminded me that, as far as I can remember, the original planning application for this very tall building was exceeded when it was built.
I seem to recall that the planning officer for Chelsea Borough Council, a Mr Hudson, sent a letter to the developers
stating that they could build HIGHER than the Committee members had allowed.
This all happened such a long time ago I have forgotten most of the details and it of course happened before everything was put on the "net"

I am reminded of the film which stars James Stewart where an angel takes him to an alternate universe where Pottersville was filled with bars and gambling joints.
In real life Kensington and Chelsea is becoming affordable only for dodgy multi-millionares, gamblers and "non doms" while people who do the real work have to live 20 or 30 miles away, at least!

Yours Sincerely

  1. Is this the same Planning Director of K&C who was sent to jail? For corruption?

  4. Charlie Hudson, the Borough Planning Officer prior to 1975ish, was convicted of accepting bribes. It was found by the court that he had promised a developer that he would get permission for a comprehensive redevelopment round St Stephen's Church, Southwell Gardens, had received various rewards in kind and cash, and when the committee rejected the application the furious developer shopped him to the police (and thus also incriminated himself).

The site is actually directly opposite the Penta/Forum/Holiday Inn, so she may be confusing the two; or perhaps Hudson had his fingers in more pies than I know of.

The Casino proposal is on a Garden Square protected by the London Squares Preservation Act 1931 - this cannot be allowed to be disregarded - please object to the application PP/14/08952
